GoPro unveils 5K, dual-screened, hyper-smooth Hero9 Black

GoPro unveils 5K, dual-screened, hyper-smooth Hero9 Black”

I was able to get my hands on a unit, and these are my first impressions of the new GoPro Hero 9 Black. This is not a new feature but it was removed back when the Hero 8 launched, which ended up upsetting a lot of the people but the feature is finally making its return. But the tiny monochrome screen was only useful to show recording setting and status.

The rear touchscreen is a bit larger, measuring 2.27 inches diagonally, and there's a new front-facing colour display too. Around back the rear LCD has also been enlarged to 2.27 inches, so nearly the entire back of the Hero 9 is all screen now.

Despite including a front-facing LCD, you can also get a Display Mod for the Hero9.

The HERO9 Black features a new image sensor capable of producing 5K video and 20-megapixel videos, ensuring your footage looks crisp and clean.

The Max Lens Mod will be available globally starting October 2020.

Some other features mentioned for the Hero9 Black are TimeWarp 3.0 featuring Real Speed and Half Speed, 1080p live streaming, SuperPhoto + HDR Night lapse video, RAW photos, Built-in folding mounting fingers and compatibility with Max Lens Mod, Light Mod, Display Mod and Media Mod. While better battery life is great news, this also contributes to the device's increased size and weight, and means you'll need to buy new spare batteries as you can't reuse existing ones.

The all-new Max Lens Mod ($99.99) brings unbreakable Max HyperSmooth video stabilization and low-distortion, ultra-wide Max SuperView to HERO9 Black at up to 2.7K60 resolution. That enables some pretty cool effects in video.

GoPro is also aiming to reduce plastic waste by eliminating plastic from HERO9 Black's packaging and adding a travel case that fits additional mounts and accessories.

You are also getting an updated USC-C port location and now it is below the power/mode button which makes it a lot more convenient for everyone to use. Among this version's new features is the ability to automatically maintain a straight horizon, no matter how much the camera itself jiggles from side to side. Those same mods are back for the Hero 9 with some minor improvements (the $80 media mod is now weather-resistant and comes with a removable foam windshield). Duration Capture lets you tell it when to switch off.
