Nintendo has discontinued the 3DS family”

Disappointing launch sales led Nintendo to slash the price of the 3DS from about $250 to roughly $170 less than six months after its release, according to reports.

It's a quiet end for a console that played a major role in helping Nintendo survive the last decade, and brings and end to the era of dual screen gaming from the Japanese manufacturer, an era that lasted 16 years. Meanwhile, the Nintendo of America page for the 3DS family of devices now just redirects to the home page.

Nintendo said Thursday it has stopped making the 3DS family of systems, and it has updated the 3DS and 2DS Japanese product pages, which say that the items are out of production. The biggest feature of the handheld, at the time, was its ability to show stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses. With the release of the Switch in 2017, Nintendo focused its home console and handheld development into one system. These pages have since been reinstated with a new disclaimer confirming that 3DS manufacture has ended on the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, and Nintendo 2DS XL.

It failed to capture the unprecedented levels of success enjoyed by its predecessor, the Nintendo DS, however with more than 75 million units sold between the various models, it was more than capable of helping push Sony's PlayStation Vita to an early grave.
