Queen Elizabeth II must suppress 'personal views' as global status threatened”

"At the very personal level I have tremendous regard for Her Majesty, I have a very good relationship with Prince Charles, our countries have had deep relationships, and I think we're mature enough to know the time has come for us to move forward".

Barbados is shedding its colonial tradition and with it its head of state, Queen Elizabeth II. "This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving", she added.

After establishing its own head of state next year, the nation, like many other former territories in the British Empire, is expected to become a republic within the Commonwealth.

Roy R. Morris, press secretary to the prime minister of Barbados, said in response to Reuters questions that there was no particular trigger for the timing of a renewed push to become a republic other than fulfilling a longstanding promise by the island's politicians.

Buckingham Palace said the issue was a matter for the people of Barbados, Reuters reported. Commonwealth nations include Canada, Australia and New Zealand. "The decision to become a republic shouldn't be taken in the context of us wanting to get rid of the Queen".

Experts have also said that move could have received an impetus thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and its worldwide anti-racism protests after the death of George Floyd in the U.S. in May.

The country will join former Caribbean colonies Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Guyana, which all achieved independence and became republics in the 1960s and 1970s, but stayed within the Commonwealth.

Today's population of under 300,000 is overwhelmingly of African descent.

According to the Daily Mail, Prime Minister Mia Mortley quoted the island nation's first premier Errol Barrow in a written speech warning against "loitering on colonial premises".

"Having attained Independence over half a century ago, our country can be in no doubt about its capacity for self-governance", she said.

Prince Harry (right) reiterated the Queen's sentiment during his 2016 visit to the nation, in which he and Barbados native Rhianna (left) underwent an HIV finger prick test.

When Barbados made a decision to retain the British monarch as head of state even after achieving independence, it was seen as a strategic move to maintain close ties with the United Kingdom.

During Queen Elizabeth's reign, eight referendums have been held on becoming a republic, of which three passed: Ghana (1960), South Africa (1960) and The Gambia (1970).
