University professor fatally crushed in elevator mishap”

O'Connor died Monday at her Commonwealth Avenue apartment building after witnesses said an "old-fashioned" elevator collapsed as she was loading a box into the lift.

Carrie O'Connor, who turned 38 on August 19, had just begun her second year teaching French full-time at BU and was a passionate traveler, according to an obituary posted on the university's website. Neighbors told reporters at the scene they heard a scream and discovered that the elevator had plunged to the bottom level, where O'Connor was found dead.

She said: "So he was walking up the staircase and was just talking to her".

O'Connor had just moved into the building on Commonwealth Ave a few weeks ago.

State regulators said the elevator had recently been inspected and certified. "However, if you have something in there, it can trigger a sensor", Scorzoni said.

Her cause of death has reportedly been ruled as traumatic asphyxia, and officials confirmed it was accidental.

City records show the residence was built in 1920, though the age of the elevator wasn't clear Wednesday.

As a vegetarian, she enjoyed baking and experimenting with different recipes, her mother said, particularly breads, but also English muffins, soft pretzels, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cookies and cakes.

"The vehicle had to have gone at least halfway down", Scorzoni said.

Her profile on Boston University's Web site says she graduated with a BS degree from Virginia Tech, an MA degree from Middlebury College and a PhD in French Studies at Louisiana State University. "This can definitely feel springy and unnerving".

Attempts to reach the listed owner of the building were unsuccessful.

Stan Sclaroff, dean of Arts and Sciences at the university, added that she would be "sorely missed".

"She was the kind of colleague that you could trust so deeply and she made our jobs easier and more enjoyable with her steady presence and collaboration", Lakin-Schultz said in a statement released by BU. "She was such a bright light among us and we are heartbroken that her time here was cut so very short".

Professor O'Connor's body was found in the elevator.

Carrie's mum Christal said her daughter was a passionate student, cook and traveller.
