WNBA's Maya Moore Marries Man She Helped Free From Wrongful Conviction”

They explained they'd quietly gotten married a few months ago, and they were "excited" to begin this new chapter together.

"Because being in a relationship with a man in prison is extremely painful", he explained. Just hours after he was released, exhausted but still full of excitement from finally stepping back into the world as a free man, Irons asked Moore to marry him.

"I wanted to marry her, but at the same time protect her because being in a relationship with a man in prison, it's hard", he recounted.

Irons originally asked Moore to marry him several years ago, but he was cognizant of what would mean for Moore if she said yes.

"When I got out we were in the hotel room". At the time, he was serving a 50-year sentence after being convicted of burglary and assault as a teenager in 1998. Irons maintained his innocence while he was in prison, saying he was wrongly identified during the lineup. A judge ruled in March that prosecutors suppressed critical fingerprint evidence that strengthened Irons' defence.

While Irons, now 40, has spent most of his life in prison for a crime he didn't commit, he said he doesn't feel resentment toward the man who wrongly identified him, and said that Stotler is a "victim" as well.

I got to know him and over the last 13 years, we have developed a friendship and entered into this huge battle to get him home.
