Florida State's Mike Norvell contracts COVID-19, won't coach vs”

Per the ACC covid-19 report, anyone within a football program who tests positive is required to isolate for 10 days, which includes Florida State's next game September 26 on the road against Miami.

In Norvell's absence, it is expected for offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham to assume the role of interim head coach. Norvell is in his first year leading the Seminoles.

Norvell said in a statement that he's surprised by the result after testing negative twice earlier this week. Florida State is scheduled to face the Miami Hurricanes next week, who have a revamped offense with quarterback D'Eriq King.

He said his wife and daughter tested negative Saturday.

FSU athletic director David Coburn said Norvell is isolated from the team and university staff is conducting contact tracing.

Norvell said he will remain as involved as possible while working remotely and is grateful "to the administration, players, and staff for their commitment to the protocols we have in place, which have helped us limit contact with others and allowed us to continue moving forward".

Chris Thomsen has 24 years of collegiate coaching experience. The Seminoles are now 0-1 after losing their season-opening game to Georgia Tech 16-13. Matthews has since entered the transfer portal. He said he feels fine and is isolating at home for at least 10 days, and will watch the nationally televised game from home Saturday night.

Norvell tested positive for the disease on Friday, making him unavailable to coach the Seminoles for the foreseeable future - including their Week 4 rivalry matchup against No. 17 Miami. "We are proceeding with our COVID protocols as we would with any other case".

FSU has not released any new testing numbers since the players' return in June. "We will continue to test staff and student-athletes as we have been", Coburn said. "At this point, based on our testing this week, we have no reason to believe that the Miami game is in jeopardy".
