Apple's smaller rivals unite to fight iPhone app store rules

Apple's smaller rivals unite to fight iPhone app store rules”

Called the Coalition for App Fairness, the group argues that Apple's 15-30 percent fee from each App Store purchase is too high, and that its App Store practices are "anti-competitive", and offer "no consumer freedom".

Some of the major members of the coalition are Basecamp, Blix, Blockchain, Deezer, Epic Games, EPC, Spotify, and Tile. It says that "Every day, Apple taxes consumers & crushes innovation".

Apple has said that its App Store rules and fees are fair and are created to ensure a high-quality and secure user experience. "Match Group joins the Coalition in its efforts to ensure everyone is able to enjoy the benefits of a fair app ecosystem", said Mark Buse, SVP and Head of Global Government Relations & Policy at Match Group. This differs from Apple's policies in regards to Macs, because you can install apps outside of the Mac App Store.

Additionally, the CAF created 10 App Store Principles, outlining what its founding members believe will create a fair app ecosystem for developers and consumers alike.

Fortnite's developer, Epic Games, responded by suing the companies over what it sees as anti-competitive behavior.

A number of companies have formed a non-profit organization with the goal of forcing Apple to change its App Store practices.

The group also criticized Apple's 30% cut for most apps and subscriptions.

The long-standing controversy over the so-called "Apple tax" the company imposes on apps in its App store has resurfaced in a new standoff with recently launched email management app Hey, a dispute that brings into sharp focus the unchecked dictatorial power Apple wields over apps and their creators - and.

Spotify filed an official complaint with the European Union in 2019, alleging that as Apple had launched its own music-streaming service Apple Music this allowed it to artificially inflate prices while entering the market. They may also be capable of hosting their own app and services and their own infrastructure, but have no choice but to use Apple's platform to reach iOS customers. According to some developers, Apple's policies are there to give Apple services an edge.

And Epic Games....well, who can forget the juicy courtroom drama taking place between Epic and Apple right now? For example, a Fortnite membership costs $7.99 on the Fortnite website and $9.99 on the App Store.

Each of these developers has tangled with Apple individually over its in-app payment policy.

Apple and Epic Games are due back in court on September 28.
