Canada at 'crossroads' with COVID-19 case numbers rising - global

Canada at 'crossroads' with COVID-19 case numbers rising - global”

The message throughout the presentation was clear: everyone needs to act now to limit their contacts or things will get worse.

The EU agreement will help Sanofi and GSK to scale-up manufacturing on the antigen and adjuvant components with the aim of producing up to one billion doses per year overall to meet the demand for COVID-19 vaccines across the world.

Anand said Canada had signed a deal with Sanofi and GSK for up to 72 million doses of their potential adjuvanted Covid-19 vaccine, and had increased by up to 14 million doses a previous agreement for the Moderna vaccine candidate.

"To address a global health crisis of this magnitude, it takes partnerships and we are grateful to Canada for its collaboration, and to GSK for partnering with us to develop a safe and effective vaccine", he continued.

Canada already signed in August agreements in principle for candidate vaccines with American firms Novavax, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna.

"Sanofi has a long-standing legacy of developing safe and effective vaccines for Canadians", Jean-Pierre Baylet, general manager for Sanofi Pasteur Canada, said in the same release.

Each level adds more volunteers on whom the drug is tested, looking for adverse health effects and whether the vaccine does cause a person to develop antibodies that can protect against COVID-19.

Procurement Minister Anita Anand also announced new agreements in obtaining eventual coronavirus vaccines for Canada, and a first purchase of 150,000 vials of remdesivir, an anti-viral medication produced by Gilead Sciences Inc.

The latest numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Canada as of 4 a.m. EDT on September 23, 2020: There are 146,663 confirmed cases in Canada.

Canada is also joining the COVAX Facility, a vaccine sharing program connected to worldwide organizations including the World Health Organization and the Vaccine Alliance of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research and the Canadian Society for International Health have both criticized Canada for acting to buy doses of vaccine for itself, saying it hinders efforts to ensure successful vaccines are distributed fairly around the world. The United States has not joined.

Separately, Doug Ford, premier of Canada's largest province Ontario, said he would begin implementing a six-point plan "to tackle a potentially more challenging second wave of Covid-19".
