The NHS Covid-19 app, which has been rolled out across England and Wales, aims to help track and trace transmission of the virus.

The NHS Covid-19 app will alert users if they have been close to someone who later tests positive for coronavirus, as well as providing risk alerts based on a user's postcode, allow users to scan QR codes to check in at venues on the app and allow people to book tests, if they have symptoms.

How does the NHS test and trace app work?

If someone falls ill, they can tell the app, which will then ping their keys to a central server and in turn send them off to all app users in search of a match.

Speaking on BBC's Radio 4 programme, Mr Hancock said: "People have been asking me, Is there a number that you need?"

The UK National Health Service is rolling out its coronavirus contact tracing app based on the Exposure Notification framework created by Apple and Google.

It also has a QR code scanner, so users can check-in to bars and restaurants.

Scotland launched its own app - Protect Scotland - on September 10 and has since been downloaded over a million times. On Android, the app is supported on version 6.0, also known as Marshmallow, and higher.

Coronavirus is highly contagious, so by ensuring you quarantine yourself for 14 days after coming in to contact with a confirmed case, you are potentially saving tens, or even hundreds of lives.

The health secretary described the app as "an important tool in addition to all the other tools that we have" - adding that one of the reasons he'd delayed the launch until now was because he didn't want to release an app that wasn't effective.

It is available to download for iOs devices through the app store, and for Android devices through the Google Play Store.

The app detects when a fellow user is nearby using Bluetooth, when two phones running the app are near each other they make contact and if close for a long enough time and one of the two owners later shares a positive coronavirus test via the app, then the other will receive an alert.

So, which Apple and Android phones are compatible with the test and trace app?

It doesn't collect any location data or personally identifiable information, plus everything is decentralised.
