Played in Hamburg despite testing positive: Benoit Paire”

"I can't take it anymore, I'm breaking", he said. Here in Germany you test positive and you can play. So thank you to the tournament and the doctor here in Hamburg that I can play.

Paire's positive test caused issues for organisers of the US Open as those he had come into contact with him had to be placed in what was described as a "bubble within the bubble". In Paris there are players who have tested negative but since their coach has tested positive, they can not play. Local health officials in Hamburg decided on Saturday that Paire should be allowed to play.

The rules are different for the French Open, where any positive test means immediate elimination from the event.

Japan's Kei Nishikori was one of the big names forced to miss the US Open due to testing positive for COVID-19 before the tournament started.

"The problem is that I am exhausted", a clearly frustrated Paire told reporters.

"According to tournament doctor Dr. Volker Carrero, it is not uncommon that three weeks after a positive result, fragments of the virus can still be found inside the body", the Hamburg Open said in a statement.

"I had a positive COVID (test) at the US Open, 10 days in my room, then I had to go to Rome, I played, but I didn't practise at all".

"Then I arrived here with (a) positive Covid-19 (result)".

"I am very proud of my family and very happy to have a new baby in our lives and it was a really nice experience to live with my wife".

I think the tournament here managed the situation better.

"If it's negative, I will be on court and try to do my best - but it will not be my best for sure. I hope next season will be normal".

Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed his first ATP Tour win of the season on clay, beating Dan Evans 6-3 6-1 inside an hour, while Andrey Rublev and Cristian Garin both reached the quarter-finals.

Reigning champion Nikoloz Basilashvili went down 6-4 6-3 to Roberto Bautista Agut, while third seed Gael Monfils bowed out with a 6-4 6-3 loss to Yannick Hanfmann.
