Google Maps' 'Live View' AR feature gets landmarks and improved accuracy”

Soon, you'll also be able to see nearby landmarks so you can quickly and easily orient yourself and understand your surroundings. These landmarks can include iconic places, like the Empire State Building in NY and the Pantheon in Rome, and easily recognizable places, like local parks and tourist attractions. Live View will show you how far away certain landmarks are from you and what direction you need to go to get there. Google said Live View will show other big landmarks, including the Pantheon in Rome and "easily recognizable places" like parks and tourist attractions.

And the mobile application is now getting an overhaul for the Live View mode, this time with more information on the surroundings for a defined location. The destination pin is also being made more accurate thanks to advancements in global localization.

Live View can be accessed by tapping on the button of the same name when looking up a place on Google Maps.

Now though, as long as your transit directions include a walking portion in the journey, you can use Live View to find your way, which should be useful when you exit a transit station and don't know which way to go, for example. Google says the feature will soon expand to all Android and iOS users on ARCore and ARKit supported phones to make meeting up with friends in unfamiliar places that much easier.

Introduced a year ago, Live View has become an incredibly useful feature of Google Maps, combining Street View's real-world imagery, machine learning, and smartphone sensors to get a street level view with directions overlaid in augmented reality. 25 cities worldwide will soon have their Landmarks available to be viewed using Live View.

Previously announced for the Google Pixel with Android 11, Live View in Location Sharing is now supposed to roll out to all Android devices and iPhones in the coming weeks, according to Google.
