Hubble watches exploding star fade into oblivion - ScienceDaily”

When it comes online, the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to see even further than Hubble and hopefully catch more spectacular celestial fireworks. This blast was not recorded by Hubble but it captured consecutive pictures of the 2018gv from 2018 to 2019 as the supernova became brighter than the brightest stars of the spiral galaxy to only lose its light and fade out ultimately.

The thermonuclear explosion was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope which is jointly run by NASA and the Euoropean Sapce Agency. In the photographs, we can easily see a dim light coming out of supernova 2018gv.

NASA and the ESA chose to focus on the barred spiral galaxy NGC 2525, found in the Puppis constellation, which is visible in the Southern Hemisphere from our planet's perspective. Supernovae can help astronomers measure the distances to galaxies, acting like mile markers for the rate at which galaxies speed away from each other.

The time lapse was put together as part of a program by NASA and the European Space Agency measuring the expansion rate of our universe.

NASA said that the Hubble telescope has captured a quick and very rare glimpse of a supernova.

In the time-lapse sequence, spanning almost a year, the supernova first appears as a blazing star located on the galaxy's outer edge.

Dr Riess' researchers combined the distance measurements from the supernovae with distances calculated using variable stars called Cepheid variables. This particular white dwarf is part of a binary system, two stars orbiting around the same point in space.

If the white dwarf reaches a critical mass - 1.44 times the mass of our sun - its core gets hot enough to ignite carbon fusion.

The resulting energy released tears the star apart in a cataclysmic explosion. Astronomers call them "standard candles" and add that they act as tapes measures for the universe. The 30-second clip reveals a fading supernova in a galaxy positioned 70 million mild years away.

These pulsate in size, causing periodic fluctuations in brightness. But Hubble was also created to be serviced and upgraded over time - in space. A more accurate Hubble constant may uncover clues about the invisible dark matter and mysterious dark energy, responsible for accelerating the Universe's rate of expansion. "If we did our job, astronomers would be given this great opportunity to share Hubble's science with the world and the beauty of the universe".
