Antivirus software magnate John McAfee indicted for tax evasion”

Onetime Bay Area kook turned global kook/accused murderer and tax evader John McAfee has been arrested in Spain and will apparently be extradited to the USA soon to face tax evasion charges.

According to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, McAfee failed to file a tax return for the tax years 2014 through 2018 and took additional steps "to evade and defeat" paying taxes to the federal government.

None of the income under scrutiny is connected to the software firm which bears his name.

McAfee has had a contentious affiliation with the regulation for years, although it's at instances unclear which run-ins are actual and what has been fabricated. He is also accused of concealing assets, including a yacht, vehicle and property, in the names of others.

McAfee developed early internet security software and has been sought by authorities in the USA and Belize in the past.

"McAfee promoted multiple ICOs on Twitter, allegedly pretending to be impartial and independent even though he was paid more than $23 million in digital assets for the promotions", the SEC claims.

The complaint seeks permanent injunctive relief, conduct-based injunctions, return of allegedly ill-gotten gains, and civil penalties.

The cybersecurity pioneer is reportedly also facing charges of cryptocurrency promotion from the SEC.

Neither he nor Mr McAfee have commented publicly on the charges.

McAfee, 74, is the latest high-profile figure to be accused of illegally "touting" ICOs, joining celebrities including music producer DJ Khaled and professional boxer Floyd Mayweather.

A Brief announcement of arrest and release of indictment documents, The DOJ explains that the allegations are only against the McAfee individual and that they have found no connection with the "anti-virus company with his name". The business has since been sold off.

The entrepreneur, who was born in the United Kingdom, also launched unsuccessful bids to become the Libertarian Party's candidate for the presidential elections in 2016 and 2020.

McAfee is charged with five counts of tax evasion and five counts of willful failure to file tax returns. He spent a brief time in custody in the Dominican Republic this summer after authorities discovered undeclared weapons on board his yacht, but "went dark" and moved to an undisclosed location after he was spotted in Iceland by an internet sleuth.

In 2012, Mr McAfee made headlines after Belize police began investigating the death of his neighbour, Florida businessman Gregory Faull, and named Mr McAfee as a "person of interest".
