Covid-19 neurological symptoms emerge in most hospitalized patients, study says”

More than 80% of hospitalized coronavirus patients experience neurological symptoms ranging from dizziness to an altered mental state.

Patients presenting with neurologic symptoms were younger than those who didn't have symptoms.

The discovering brings genuine public worries up considering President Donald Trump's ongoing three-night remain at Walter Reed Medical Center, and for a bigger scope they additionally feature the psychological harm the Covid has delivered on countless Americans. The study, which monitored 509 patients in 10 hospitals in Chicago between March 5 and April 6, found that 82% of patients had neurologic symptoms at some point in the course of the disease. Just over a quarter had been put on ventilators.

Out of 509 patients, 162 suffered from encephalopathy. "Since most patients were admitted to dedicated COVID-19 wards or ICUs with strict infection control precautions in place, access to brain CT or MRI was not as readily available as for other patients with neurologic diseases", the study says.

The most common symptoms were muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, and encephalopathy, which can lead to a range of issues from temporary trouble focusing and lethargy to personality changes and permanent brain damage.

The study noted that patients with encephalopathy - altered memory function - were also nearly seven times as likely to die as those who did not have neurological problems.

He said in a news release, if his tests prove that pain relief is a symptom and possible cause of what is triggering the spread of the virus, that would be "of tremendous value".

The study also found that Black and Latino patients were not more likely than other groups to develop neurological symptoms.

"There are only two other published papers describing the prevalence of neurological manifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in China and Europe. That is important", Dr. Alejandro Rabinstein, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic, said.

"Neurologic appearances happen in most hospitalized COVID‐19 patients", the examination says. "Those are reversible, and benign".

Nath was not involved in the study.

"The idea is to raise awareness among neuropsychologists that PTSD is something you might want to consider when evaluating persistent cognitive and emotional difficulties among COVID- 19 survivors", said Dr. Levine.

Loss of sense of smell and taste was complained about by 16% and 11% of patients, respectively.

Indeed, Koralnik said such problems could be the first signs of a coronavirus infection. Past research and anecdotes have revealed how the virus may affect the brain Early in the pandemic, doctors and researchers mostly thought of COVID-19 as a respiratory disease. Nearly a third of hospitalized coronavirus patients experienced encephalopathy.

If the symptoms are due, even partially, to a psychiatric condition such as PTSD, treatment will help manage those symptoms, and provide a clearer view of any underlying brain issues.

"This is the first study in the USA of the prevalence of neuro manifestations in a large population of hospitalized patients", Koralnik told MedPage Today. Nonetheless, the research is a strong reminder that COVID-19 is much more than a respiratory disease-and that we are only now beginning to see the full picture of its impact.
