PureGym sorry for 'unacceptable' slavery post

PureGym sorry for 'unacceptable' slavery post”

It comes after Laurence Fox accused Sainsbury's of "promoting racial segregation and discrimination" and said he would be boycotting the supermarket chain after they promoted Black History Month. The tone-deaf and racist post said, "slavery was hard and so is this".

Fitness centre operator PureGym has apologised "unreservedly" for an "unacceptable" Facebook post from one of its gyms about slavery.

Entitled "12 Years of Slave" (after the epic movie) this is our workout designed by @mattsimpt to celebrate Black History Month.

PureGym issued a statement apologising for the post after four hours. The twist to this is 1 rep of your 1st exercise, 2 of the second but before you move on to the 3rd exercise which is also 3 reps you must start at the beginning to move on.

The original creator of the workout, personal trainer Matt Simpson, has now come forward with an Instagram apology that claims there was "absolutely no malice or ill intentions meant by the post".

"If a commitment to change is going to transcend beyond social media into real change, everyone, from all communities, needs to embrace Black History Month as a starting point for exploring, discovering and celebrating Black history, heritage and culture - both past and contemporary". It's unclear why the post promoted a months-old holiday. "It is incredibly inappropriate/offensive to liken a hard workout (which, compared to slavery, is a walk in the park. and undertaken voluntarily) with the slave trade", a Facebook user quoted by The Independent said.

PureGym later described the post as "wholly unacceptable" and was "not approved or endorsed by the company". "We take this matter extremely seriously and are urgently investigating how and why this post was made", Pure Gym said. Each of the company's 271 gyms has its own social media channels which are run locally, it added. "Thank you o those people who commented on this post and for raising this with us". Simpson took to Twitter to question what was so "interesting" about the name of the workout, arguing he had chosen the film because the routine had 12 exercises in it.
