Canada accounts for 0.4% of worldwide ocean plastic pollution

Canada accounts for 0.4% of worldwide ocean plastic pollution”

The Trudeau government is pushing forward in its fight against plastics with a list of banned single-use plastic items.

When the ban on single-use plastics was first announced, the federal government said it would be focusing on holding big companies responsible for their plastic production, requiring them to play a part in collecting and recycling their materials.

The ban covers plastic straws, stir sticks, carry-out bags, cutlery, dishes and takeout containers and six pack rings for cans and bottles.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson speaks during a news conference announcing the ban of specific plastic products Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020 in Gatineau, Que.

Canada intends to impose binding standards for how much recyclable plastic content there has to be in products and packaging and wants new rules in place within 24 months, a top official said on Wednesday.

The federal government is taking steps to stop plastics from ending up in our waters, like Lake Huron, as it works to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.

Though the report highlighted how the evidence is incomplete, its authors conclude that plastic pollution is "everywhere" - from oceans to lakes to groundwater and soil, and even floats through the air and collects in clumps of household dust.

"Canadian shores are not a major global source of marine plastic litter", says the report by the Library of Parliament, Global Marine Plastic Pollution: Sources, Solutions And Canada's Role.

"From an environmental point of view, from an energy point of view, from a natural resource point of view this idea of being able to recycle more and more is something we should strive for as much as we can", Guilbeault said.

Wilkinson says "These are things that are harmful in the environment".

Industry groups like the Retail Council of Canada and Canadian Federation of Independent Business have warned plastics bans could increase the cost of groceries and packaged goods.

"And what that means is that the industry that puts plastic products on the market also takes responsibility for those plastic products after they are used".

The federal Liberal government is starting consultations with enterprises and the 10 provinces on how to draw up rules on greater use of recycled plastic.
