Chelsea suffer Edouard Mendy injury blow ahead of Southampton clash

Chelsea suffer Edouard Mendy injury blow ahead of Southampton clash”

Edouard Mendy is reportedly optimistic he'll be out for only two weeks following the thigh injury he sustained during training on worldwide duty with Senegal.

He picked up the injury during a Senegal training session and has returned to London for assessment by Chelsea's medical team.

"Edouard Mendy has left the group this afternoon to return to his Club (Chelsea) where he will undergo further examinations".

Kepa Arrizabalaga said he can turn around his Chelsea career despite the Blues' purchase of Edouard Mendy last month.

He injured his right thigh in training on Wednesday and has been sent back to London after an examination at a hospital in Rabat.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper helped the Ligue 1 outfit qualify for the Champions League for the first time last season, attracting the attention of Premier League giants Chelsea in the process.

Edouard Mendy has impressed the Blues' fans in his first two appearances against Spurs and Crystal Palace for Chelsea following his £20million transfer from Rennes. Chelsea hosts Southampton in PL play on October 17 and Sevilla to kick off the Champions League group stage October 20.

'He will be replaced by the young goalkeeper of the U20 national team, Boubacar Fall, who was regrouping in Toubab Dialao and who moved to Rabat in the early evening'.

The 28-year-old was brought in by Frank Lampard to address the goal-keeping unit, with Kepa Arrizabalaga coming under vast criticism in recent months.

Kepa, the world's most expensive keeper, kept a clean sheet for Spain against Portugal on Wednesday.

Calls for Mendy to take Kepa's spot as the Blues No.1 on a permanent basis have been widespread but he could now face a spell on the sidelines due to injury.
