Disney and Pixar's 'Soul' to Stream Exclusively on Disney Plus

Disney and Pixar's 'Soul' to Stream Exclusively on Disney Plus”

Pixar's animated film Soul will dodge a theatrical release and head straight to the Disney+ streaming service, the entertainment giant has said, in the latest blow to the beleaguered cinema industry. The animated family film will launch on the streaming service on December 25. In worldwide markets where Disney+ isn't now or soon to be available, Soul will be released theatrically, with dates to be announced.

"Soul" was initially slated to release in June, but it was later postponed to November 20 amid the pandemic. Directed by Academy Award® victor Pete Docter ("Inside Out", "Up"), co-directed by Kemp Powers ("One Night in Miami") and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray, p.g.a. (Pixar short "Lou"), Disney and Pixar's "Soul" opens in USA theaters on November 20, 2020. The company is trying to attract more customers to Disney+, which has signed up more than 60 million subscribers worldwide.

Thankfully, Disney+ won't place Soul behind a $30 paywall on top of the $6.99 monthly fee like the live-action remake of Mulan, so the movie can be viewed at no extra cost to subscribers.

On Wednesday, the activist investor Daniel Loeb, founder of hedge fund Third Point, urged the company to more than double its budget for streaming content in a letter to Disney Chief Executive Bob Chapek.

It's been a pretty disastrous week for cinemas between Cineworld temporarily closing all its branches and another slew of movies, including "The Batman", "Dune" and 'Jurassic World: Dominion', getting postponed.

'A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one's place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season'. Earlier this week, Cinemark said it would again shutter the USA and United Kingdom locations of its Regal cinemas, the country's second-largest theater chain.

In recent weeks, the few movies left on the release calendar for 2020 have started to vacated their dates. Following the exit of the James Bond film "No Time to Die" from November, the next big movie on the calendar is Warner Bros.′ "Wonder Woman 1984", now set for December 25. "With "Soul's" vacancy", there's only one potential blockbuster - "Wonder Woman 1984" on December 25 - left on the release calendar for 2020. This November, Pixar Animation Studios' all-new feature film "Soul" introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) - a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. Disney has not yet provided details on how "Mulan" fared as a rental title.

When his soul becomes separated from his body, he finds himself in a place called The Before. "Soul investigates what's really important in our lives, a question we're all asking these days".
