Lewis Hamilton penalised by stewards for pre Russian Grand Prix infringements

Lewis Hamilton penalised by stewards for pre Russian Grand Prix infringements”

Hamilton said the monitors were "trying to stop me", describing the punishment as "absurd". "We don't want to get in the way of talent so we are already working on every position for the future", Wolff told Sky Sports after the race in Russian Federation.

He eventually finished the race third as teammate Valtteri Bottas scored his second win of the season.

"Never give up. It's a good day", said Bottas, who addressed his critics in more basic terms over the team radio as he took the chequered flag.

"And I'm glad even [though] yesterday was tough, I didn't give up, I looked at the positives and I knew there would be opportunities. I guess we will talk about it in the next [drivers'] briefing we have and see if something will happen or not".

Mercedes is on the verge of conquering yet another championship this season, with second on the table team Red Bull nowhere near to them in the title challenge.

Bottas said he had been lucky but was well-placed to win anyway, with Hamilton starting on the higher-wearing softs after a fraught Saturday qualifying while the Finn was on the mediums - the better long-term strategy.

He collected two penalties, totalling 10 seconds, for practising starts in the wrong place before the race had started.

That put him on 10 penalty points for the ongoing 12 month period, with two more incurred before the Turkish GP automatically triggering a race ban. I've done this at a million tracks over the years and never been questioned on it.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who came second in the race, said the penalty "was a bit harsh". And, as a result, have fined the team €25,000 for that instruction.

"I may not always get it right in the face of adversity", wrote Hamilton.

'There was an infringement and it doesn't matter if it was Lewis or any one of the other 19 drivers.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has vowed to learn following the penalties he received at the Russian Grand Prix last Sunday, insisting he's "only human". Further down there was a nice battle between Racing Point's Sergio Perez and Renault's Daniel Ricciardo, with Perez ultimately coming out on top to finish fourth, with Ricciardo finishing fifth.

The safety auto was deployed for four laps after the start when McLaren's Carlos Sainz went off and misjudged his return to the track, hitting the wall hard.

Leclerc also tagged Lance Stroll's Racing Point, with the Canadian spinning out.

Hamilton, surprised by the penalties, told reporters afterward he did not think he had done anything out of the ordinary.
