Stop Hunger to Stop Conflict: 2020 Nobel Prize Theme”

"The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral cooperation on making food security an instrument of peace, and has made a strong contribution towards mobilising UN Member States to combat the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict", the Nobel Committee's statement said.

In light of that American pullback, the choice of the World Food Program was particularly notable because the USA remains by far its biggest donor, the agency has been run by an American for almost 40 years, and its current head - who was nominated by Trump's administration - has been a rare recent example of US -led internationalism.

WFP was honored for its efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity around the globe.

The committee has highlighted WFP's contribution in face of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it demonstrated an impressive ability to intensify its efforts.

The last time the accolade was awarded to a group was in 2017, when the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won. They are out there and they deserve this award ...

She was a favourite going into the announcement of this year's prize victor, due to NZ's handling of Covid-19, but the UN World Food Programme was announced as the victor on Friday night (NZ time).

The WFP chief, American David Beasley, in the glow of the Nobel win quickly turned to his cheering colleagues - representing a global collection of staffers, from Kyrgyzstan to Samoa - and said in his southern US twang: "I didn't win it, you won it".

But Beasley has warned that the agency is short of funds this year to feed numerous world's hungriest people, including millions in Yemen who are on the brink of starvation as the coronavirus adds to the country's woes.

"In so far as certain names crop up in the advance speculations as to who will be awarded any given year's prize, this is either sheer guesswork or information put out by the person or persons behind the nomination", the committee said on its website.

This year, 318 nominees were known to be under consideration - 211 individuals and 107 organisations.

"If (lack of) food is the reason for war and conflict, creating food-secure communities also creates safer communities who are less prone to conflict", she said, as the global prize was announced on Friday. The announcement in Oslo, the Norwegian capital, came at a much more scaled-down event than in years past because of the COVID-19 pandemic. NBC notes that the deadline for nominations this year was February 1, meaning that other organizations and individuals involved in fighting the pandemic may not have been nominated.

The New Zealand Prime Minister was nominated for the prize previous year, however it was given to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his work to resolve conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.

The award comes with a gold medal and a 10-milion krona (US$1.1 million) cash prize that is dwarfed by the funding that WFP requires for its work. The literature prize was awarded to American poet Louise Gluck on Thursday for her "candid and uncompromising" work.

Since the first Nobel prizes were awarded in 1901, the Peace Prize has never honoured work in the field of freedom of information.
