TikTok blocked in Pakistan after failing to remove 'immoral content'”

Pakistan has blocked the viral video-sharing app TikTok, accusing it of spreading indecency and immorality. Beijing has revised its list of technologies subject to export bans in a way that gives it a say over any TikTok deal.

"Prime Minister's Portal received numerous complaints from parents saying that their children are adopting to indecent activities due to the short- video app which are against the religious, social and traditional norms of the Pakistani society", he said.

TikTok is the latest app to be banned in Pakistan.

However, the company "failed to fully comply" with PTA's instructions after which the authority made a decision to ban it in the country.

"However, the application failed to fully comply with the instructions, therefore, directions were issued for blocking of TikTok application in the country", said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, PTA.

PTA said it would review its decision if the app put in place mechanisms to moderate unlawful content.

The spokesperson added, "We are hopeful to reach a conclusion that helps us continue to serve the country's vibrant and creative online community".

Owned by China's ByteDance, it has also faced increasing controversy over how it collects and uses data although it has repeatedly denied sharing user information with Chinese authorities. It has already been blocked in India and it faces scrutiny in countries from Australia to the United States.

TikTok has around 850 million worldwide users, but it has become a victim of growing tensions between China and America.

Three Pakistani officials had told Reuters earlier on Friday that a ban on the app was imminent. In July, PTA said it had issued a "final warning" to TikTok to remove "obscene and immoral content" on its platform.

Usama Khilji, director of Bolo Bhi, a Pakistani group advocating for the rights of internet users, said the decision undermined the government's dreams of a digital Pakistan.

Mirza said that it was also a source of income for many people.
