The World Health Organisation on Thursday reported a new record one-day rise in global coronavirus cases.

The biggest increases were from India, the United States and Brazil, according to the agency's website.

Nepal is where the pandemic is most on the rise, with an 81 percent increase to 2,700 new cases per day.

The average number of new infections reported in Belgium has been increasing for seven days straight, with a record daily surge of 3,577 over the past day. On Wednesday 18,764 new cases were reported, as well as 80 coronavirus-related deaths.

European countries are now preparing for a tightening up of restrictions in response to the second wave of infections.

The Belgian capital moved to restore its coronavirus lockdown when Brussels ordered cafes and bars to close for a month from Thursday. Elsewhere in Europe, Italy is the latest country to issue a nationwide mask mandate, while Berlin is set to impose a night curfew and ban on outdoor gatherings of more than five people. The country is the third-most affected by the virus, which has killed nearly 150,000 people.

Coronavirus infections have continued to soar in Europe and are also on the increase around the world.

According to a Reuters analysis of more recent country data, COVID-19 infections are rising in 54 countries, including surges in Argentina, Canada and much of Europe.

Germany, which is the largest economy of the entire European continent recorded the highest singlem day increase in the Covid-19 tally on Thursday since April.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control added Thursday ten more countries to its "red list" on its coronavirus map, meaning those countries have crossed the threshold of 120 infections per 100,000 people in the past two weeks.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned that the country was reaching a "perilous moment" in the pandemic as Downing Street confirmed that a "range of measures" was being looked at to stem the spread of infections.

While India still leads in the globe in most new cases reported per day, new infections are down 20 per cent from its peak.

The country's fatality rate is in stark contrast to the United States at 2.8%, even though the United States has recorded more than four times the total number of deaths due to the virus compared to Britain.

The country today reported the highest number of hospitalised Covid-19 since early September.

The number of deaths reported in the same period was 5,514 while the record of 12,393 deaths which was reported on April 17 remains.
