Brazil surpasses 5M COVID-19 cases”

Germany, which is the largest economy of the entire European continent recorded the highest singlem day increase in the Covid-19 tally on Thursday since April.

Yesterday's number of global new cases looked set to hit yet another high, with some 360,000 additional infections already reported, based on statistics from Our World in Data as of last night.

France's new daily Covid-19 infections remained above the record 18,000 threshold for a second consecutive day on Thursday, with new measures to curb the outbreak expected.

On Thursday, global infections rose by 338,779 in just 24 hours, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The infections throughout Europe continued to increase over the past seven days, and were concentrated in Britain, Russia, Spain and France, with each country registering more than 10,000 cases per day over the past three days.

India reported 78,524 new cases overnight, followed by Brazil at 41,906 and the USA with 38,904, the World Health Organization reported.

Infections in the United Kingdom also reached record levels with over 17,000 new cases reported on Thursday.

"We are seeing the authorities easing social distancing more and more despite the number of cases", he told the Reuters news agency. The number of new infections has since fallen nearly by half over recent days, down to some 18,000 cases per day, but still remains higher than the peaks reported by London or Moscow, data collected by Johns Hopkins University shows.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned that the country was reaching a "perilous moment" in the pandemic as Downing Street confirmed that a "range of measures" was being looked at to stem the spread of infections.

Mexico follows with 71 percent more (8,000 cases), then the Czech Republic with the same percentage rise (3,800 cases), Poland 70 percent (2,600), Belgium 68 percent (2,800), Tunisia 66 percent (1,200) and Italy 60 percent (3,000).

The country today reported the highest number of hospitalised Covid-19 since early September. However the record death toll on a single day was recorded by the body on April 17 with 12,393 deaths. Meanwhile, the infection rates throughout the continent are climbing up - and many countries only recently reported their worst infection-related data since the outbreak of the pandemic.
