IBM Announces Spin-off To Focus On Cloud

IBM Announces Spin-off To Focus On Cloud”

International Business Machines, or IBM as you might know them, has announced that it will be splitting its business in two as it shifts focus to hybrid, cloud and AI solutions.

IBM's global technology services division, where the new company is now housed, saw revenue decline 6 per cent past year to $27.4bn. Since his joining at the American IT giant in 1990, he has been a part of the developing and expanding of new markets for the company in artificial intelligence, cloud, quantum computing, and blockchain. IBM said NewCo would manage and modernize client-owned infrastructures, which it said is a $500 billion market opportunity.

IBM expects to incur a $2.5 billion charge related to the spinoff, Reuters reported.

"The US$34 Billion invested in Red Hat has proven very quickly to be a sound investment as it has generated double-digit growth and made the company instantly more credible as a competitor and contributor in the hybrid cloud space".

During a presentation to investors Thursday, Mr. Krishna and Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh said that every $1 spent on Red Hat platforms leads to $3 to $5 in the sale of applications and middleware and $6 to $8 in the sale of advanced services such as application modernization, intelligent workflows, multicloud management, security and compliance.

IBM has trimmed its legacy businesses over the years to focus on cloud, aiming to make up for slowing software sales and seasonal demand for its mainframe servers. Currently, the company has 352,000 employees.

The spinoff, tenatively named NewCo, is expected to be tax-free and completed by the end of 2021, said CNN. The $1 trillion addressable opportunity in hybrid cloud includes $300 billion in cloud transformational services, $450 billion in cloud software and platforms, and $230 billion in cloud infrastructure. According to IBM, this acquisition has helped it build out a robust and secure hybrid cloud platform. IBM values the backlog of its IT infrastructure services unit at £46.40 billion.

IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, said the spin-off will accelerate its hybrid cloud strategy while also allowing its infrastructure services business to pursue new opportunities. "NewCo will have greater agility to design, run and modernise the infrastructure of the world's most important organisations", he said adding that the move will put both companies on an improved growth trajectory. IBM closed on its Red Hat acquisition in July 2019.

The move is an attempt to shift its focus to higher-margin businesses like cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The company has positioned itself as a champion of a "hybrid cloud" approach.

IBM shares rose almost 6% by the end of trading Thursday. After the Equinix Cloud Exchange deployment, Atlantech estimated up to a 147% performance improvement for their customers. It expects that the process of separation will cost nearly $5 billion.

Offering guidance for shareholders in Q3, the company also said that it now expects revenues of $17.6bn and operating earnings per share of $2.58.
