Premier League to introduce pay per view games in UK

Premier League to introduce pay per view games in UK”

The Premier League is going pay-per-view in Britain for the first time in 13 years to broadcast some of the matches fans can not attend due to the pandemic and to raise additional revenue for clubs.

Every game this season has been available on those channels up to this point, meaning this will be a major departure from what we have seen thus far.

Manchester United's trip to Newcastle United a week on Saturday will be among the first pay-per-view games on Sky Box Office, with the fixture kicking off at 8pm.

BT and Sky, which is now part of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA), will charge £15 per pay-per-view game, it was confirmed.

"Understand [Leicester] were the only club to vote against pay-per-view at today's Premier League meeting".

The move will end the giveaway of additional matches to Sky, BT, Amazon and the BBC, which had taken place since the Premier League resumed following the coronavirus crisis. Kick-off times have been staggered in order to fit more games on live TV, but there are now five 3pm kick-offs scheduled for the next slate of games on October 17th.

In the last major auction, a combined £4.4bn was stumped up for 200 games per season by Sky (128 games) and BT (32 games), with Amazon getting the games no-one else wanted as it made its first foray into the United Kingdom game.

Members of the world's richest league were on Friday set to agree to make the rest of this month's fixtures available on Sky Sports Box Office and BT Sport Box Office instead, with all profits from the venture going to clubs.

The Premier League said it was an "interim solution" so fans can still watch their teams live.

"The agreement will be regularly reviewed in consultation with clubs and in line with any decisions made by Government regarding the return of spectators to stadiums", it added.

Premier League clubs voted 19-1 in favour of the scheme, but Maguire, author of The Price of Football and senior teacher in accountancy at the University of Liverpool, has sided with fans critical of the exorbitant fees being charged by broadcasters.

The model is different to the English Football League's iFollow service, under which fans pay £10 per game to stream their clubs' matches.
