Ontario announces modified Stage 2 restrictions for hotspots”

There were 809 new infections of COVID-19 reported across Ontario on Saturday, with almost half in Toronto.

For Ontario, that's nearly an 18 per cent increase since Thursday's report.

The province's chief medical officer of health said 12 of the new cases are in the Moncton region and seven are in the Campbellton region.

This announcement comes as Ontario reported 939 new infections this morning.

The Ontario government is taking steps to try to get a handle on the spread of COVID-19 in a few hot spots in the province.

There have been 297 deaths due to complications related to COVID-19.

We now have 225 COVID-19 patients in the hospital and 47 are in the ICU.

There are 358 new cases among those 20-39 years old, the most of any age group.

The government says it has a backlog of 58,173 tests, and has conducted 44,914 tests since the last daily report.

Toronto, Peel, and Ottawa are being moved back to a "modified stage two" level for at least the next 28 days.

There have been 5,271 total lab-confirmed cases in Ottawa, and 4,005 are considered resolved.

In the city, 875 cases remain active, but resolved cases are now at 3,978. That means just over 75 per cent of Ottawa's cases have been cleared. Eighteen other fatalities from previous dates were also added to its death toll, while one was recently removed following an investigation into the cause of death.

As of Wednesday, the most recent day for which data is available, active cases of COVID-19 had been reported at 774 public and private school, with 1,451 students and 318 staff members now affected. As of 8:05 a.m. Friday, there were 37 schools with a COVID-19 case, with 41 students and 10 staff infected.
