Engine problem delays launch of Crew Dragon till early November”

In a blog post, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) has announced that it will delay the launch of its upcoming commercial crew program (CCP) on the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA said Saturday that it will delay the October 31 liftoff of a spacecraft developed by USA company SpaceX, which will carry Japan's Soichi Noguchi and three other astronauts, citing the need for additional checkups on the rocket. The firm developed the spacecraft that will carry a crew of four including Japanese astronaut Noguchi Soichi to the global space station.

The delay gives SpaceX "additional time to complete hardware tests and data reviews as the company evaluates the non-nominal behavior of Falcon 9's first-stage engine inflators observed in a recent launch attempt outside NASA", NASA said. While the Demo-2 flight made history as a return to American astronauts launching from their home soil, Crew-1 represents the first standard NASA mission using an occupied, privately made capsule.

Kathy Lueders, associate administrator of NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, said the partnership helped the agency make informed decisions about its missions.

SpaceX carried out the first astronaut trip to orbit by a private company earlier this year when it took NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the ISS and back.

The team will travel to the station in the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and spend six months on the orbiting laboratory conducting research. A seat on a SpaceX capsule is projected to cost $US55 million, not including the funding NASA gave SpaceX to develop its new Crew Dragon spaceship.

These were the details of the news NASA is delaying the SpaceX Crew 1 mission to mid-November for this day. The mission will re-use the Dragon Capsule that brought astronauts Bohnken and Harley to ISS in May this year and launched man-made spaceflight from US soil. "We should be a lot smarter within the coming week".

This included tests with the environmental control system, displays, maneuvering thrusters and other technologies.

Much is riding on Crew-1.

The mission was previously scheduled for 2:40 a.m. ET on October 31.

The nine first-stage engines in the Falcon 9 that will launch the Crew Dragon are presumably healthy, but engineers want to make sure they fully understand what caused the October 2 launch abort with a different rocket before pressing ahead with a piloted mission.

Another team will arrive at the ISS before then: NASA astronaut Kate Rubins and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov are slated to blast off on a Russian Soyuz rocket on Wednesday, October 14.
