One dead as building collapses at Curtin University campus in Australia”

A 23-year-old man has died after a glass roof collapsed at Curtin University in Perth on Tuesday afternoon.

A third man was inside the structure at the time, and has also been taken to hospital. Both of them, as well as the person who died, are all understood to be construction workers.

One of them is in a critical condition, while the other man is stable.

CFMEU state secretary Mick Buchan said he had been made aware after the incident of there being issues with "deflection in the structural steel".

'We are not going to leave any rock unturned to get to the outcome of what has happened, ' he said.

"It's 2020. These events should not occur in the building and construction industry", he said. Another young worker has lost his life here today'.

"The site is under the management of head contractor, Lend Lease [Lendlease Group]".

Currently, emergency services are trying to secure the site in order to retrieve the worker's remains.

'I'm just happy to get home today, ' he said. He fell over 20 metres to the ground.

It's understood the five-storey building was under construction when it collapsed.

"We have been advised that no Curtin students or staff were involved in the incident".

Students at the campus received a text alerting them of the incident.

"Emergency services are at the scene".

"Please avoid the area and avoid University Boulevard".

The three men fell while working on a roof at Perth's Curtin University, a police statement said.

It is part of the Exchange precinct which combines student accommodation and a boutique hotel with teaching spaces.

Construction began in 2019 and was due to be completed next year.

Police, ambulance and fire rescuers are in attendance, along with WorkSafe officials.
