Wales could be placed under new national lockdown, health minister warns”

"Much of Wales is now under local restriction measures and people living in those areas are prohibited from travelling outside their county boundary without a reasonable excuse".

The Liverpool City Region is now the only area in the very high alert level, though this could change as infections continue to rise.

The UK Prime Minister's spokesperson has said that "people from high risk areas shouldn't be leaving those areas" but the government has not put these restrictions in law and instead relied on people following guidance only.

Mr Gething replied, "Ministers will be meeting today with the First Minister to consider the legal advice that has already been prepared to do with public health powers".

"If the Welsh Government does ban people from crossing the border into Wales from England we will do our best, along with our partners in local authorities and health to enforce the regulations". Because that would be fair to people in Wales and people across our border.

It comes as the Welsh health minister said there is now evidence that travel to and from areas of England with high rates of Covid-19 has contributed to the spread of the virus to other areas of the UK.

Mr Gething said there is now evidence of "importation of coronavirus cases from contact with some of those high prevalence areas in England".

He attached a scientific paper which he said "demonstrates the spread of infection geographically and supports the case for travel restrictions as a means of controlling the spread of the virus and avoiding seeding events in areas of lower prevalence". "For high prevalence areas, there is a very powerful rationale to making sure that travel is restricted to all other parts of the United Kingdom".

Encouraging Mr Drakeford to use Welsh powers to ban travel into the country, Mr Price said: "Begging letters to Tory prime ministers have never really worked for Wales".

Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Saville Roberts said: "People from Conwy, with 122 cases per 100,000, are not permitted by Welsh law to make non-essential journeys into Meirionnydd next door, where cases stand at 18 per 100,000".

Mr Drakeford has been backed by Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price, who has said he was "livid" that Mr Johnson is refusing to impose travel restrictions.

The Prime Minister said guidance was clear that people should not travel from very high-risk areas.

Mark Drakeford told the prime minister he had "one final opportunity" to stop people crossing the border from England.

'Now we heard it from Vaughan Gething for the first time that there is actual evidence that has been identified of transmission that's happened as a result of people coming from high-infection areas in England into Wales.
