Calling them ‘cursed’, Canadian tourist returns artifacts to Italy

Calling them ‘cursed’, Canadian tourist returns artifacts to Italy”

After suffering breast cancer twice and years of financial difficulties, a 36-year-old Canadian woman anonymously returned ancient relics she stole from an archaeological park in Pompeii that she visited when she was 20 years old.

In her speech, Nicole, who was in her early twenties when she visited "Pompeii" in 2005, indicated that she had stolen artifacts due to her poor financial condition, following her breast cancer.

In addition to the stolen artefacts, which the travel agent handed over to police, the package contained a letter of confession in which Nicole expressed regret for her actions.

"Take them back, please, they bring bad luck", the woman wrote of the two mosaic pieces, a piece of ceramic and two parts of an ancient jar known as an amphora.

The woman, who identified herself only as "Nicole" in a letter accompanying the stolen items, claims she was "young and stupid" at the time and "wanted to have a piece of history that no one could have". The last time ending in a double mastectomy. "Please forgive my careless act that I did years ago", she wrote, as mentioned in the CNN report. "We're good people and I don't want to pass this curse on to my family or children". People are drawn to its interesting history where a whole town was buried by volcanic ashes coming from the Mount Vesuvius explosion that took place in 79 A.D. The whole city remained underneath until its discovery in the late 16th century. They went on to add that they are sorry, and begged for forgiveness, reported Il Messagero.

Pompeii was covered in volcanic ash after the enormous eruption of the Mount Vesuvius in AD79. "May their souls rest in peace". She carried along with her the artefacts that would turn out to have "cursed" her life, bringing her misfortune for the years to come. A number of these notes are now on display as a warning at the Pompeii Antiquarium.

The park said is has been receiving letters for several years from visitors who have stolen small objects, such as mosaic tiles, pieces of plaster and lapilli, from the city and later chose to return them, claiming the artifacts caused a series of misfortunes.
