Gartner: global PC shipments grew 3.6% in 2020 Q3 | Corporate Finance”

In addition, he also indicated that in the quarter, gaming laptops, Chromebooks, and netbooks that support data traffic all performed well and even set new highs.

Apple shipped an estimated 5.5 million Macs during the quarter, up 7.3 percent from the 5.1 million that it shipped in the third quarter of 2019.

"Had the market not been hampered by component shortages, notebook shipments would have soared even higher during the third quarter as market appetite was yet unsatiated", Ubrani said.

Unfortunately, shortages of multiple components, such as processors, panels, and other subcomponents, led to missed opportunity for many vendors, the analyst noted. That's up from 7.0% in Q3 2019.

HP continues to be the number one US vendor with 5.1 million PCs shipped, followed by Dell with 4.1 million PCs shipped, and Lenovo with 2.5 million PCs shipped. Apple Inc. accounted for 8% of the market, up from 6% share in the same period a year earlier, Gartner said. "However, enterprise spending remained strong where government funding for distance learning and remote work has fueled device purchases, such as in the United States and Japan", Kitagawa added.

In a regional analysis, the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) (APeJ) traditional PC market grew by only single digits.

In Japan, the GIGA project through which students all over the country receive PCs and tablets for online learning, as well as strong work-from-home demand helped maintain flat growth in the traditional PC market. This is the second quarter where COVID-19-related restrictions were in effect, continuing to boost demand from Canadian households and from organizations looking to ensure business continuity through stay-at-home situations.

After close to a decade of declining revenues for PC manufactures, Gartner's latest PC shipment report for the quarter is a nice little respite from what seemed like a never-ending nosedive for the industry. Shipments were driven by inventory replenishments and strong demand for notebooks. With offices largely remaining closed there was limited demand for stationary devices.

The U.S. market had a particularly strong quarter with 11.4% growth year over year, which is the first time in ten years that the region has seen double-digit growth.

As many affected countries brace for a second wave of COVID-19, the importance of mobile workstations-and remote working tools as a whole-cannot be overstated.

Update: Gartner has also released PC shipment estimates for the third quarter, showing an uptick of 3.6% on strong growth from front-runner Lenovo. Dell had 14.8% of the market in the July-to-September period, but it's shipments actually declined slightly.
