Hidden camera's tree-hugging tiger wins Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020

Hidden camera's tree-hugging tiger wins Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020”

A tigress hugging a tree and a profile photograph of a young probosicis monkey are among the winners of this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 is Sergey Gorshkov from Russian Federation for his exquisite click of a Siberian female tiger hugging an ancient Manchurian fir tree in far eastern Russian Federation.

It took Gorshkov more than 11 months to capture the image using hidden cameras in Russia's Far East, the only place on Earth where Amur, or Siberian, tigers are found.

The judges said the photo showed a "scene like no other" and gave hope that the Siberian or Amur tigers would return.

In a recorded address for the prize ceremony on Tuesday evening, Kate, 38, said, "It is so wonderful to be back at the re-opened Natural History Museum where we can all enjoy its treasures once again".

Gorshkov, a founding member of the Russian Union of Wildlife Photographers, took his photo in Russia's Land of the Leopard National Park. "A unique glimpse of an intimate moment deep in a magical forest", said Roz Kidman Cox, chair of the judging panel.

'This is the story told in the glorious color and texture of the return of the Amur tiger, the symbol of the Russian jungle'.

"Shafts of low winter sun highlight the ancient fir tree and the coat of the huge tigress as she grips the trunk in obvious ecstasy and inhales the scent of tiger on resin, leaving her own mark as her message".

'The remarkable view of the tiger's immersion in its natural environment gives us confidence, as recent reports suggest that numbers are rising from dedicated conservation efforts. The museum will let only a limited number of visitors following all safety guidelines during COVID-19 to ensure it is a "safe and welcoming experience" to view the photographs in a crowd-free gallery.

Every year, London's Natural History Museum honours the photographers who capture the best moment of mother nature.
