Mitchelton-Scott team out of Giro after positive COVID-19 tests

Mitchelton-Scott team out of Giro after positive COVID-19 tests”

Britain's Simon Yates, one of the favourites, had to withdraw from cycling's second-biggest stage race at the weekend for the same reason, ANSA reports.

Organisers added that two riders, one each from Team Sunweb and Jumbo-Visma, had also tested positive along with four staff members from Mitchelton-Scott and one each from Team AG2R-La Mondiale and Team Ineos.

Dutch contender Steven Kruijswijk of Jumbo-Visma and Australian rider Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb also tested positive amid 571 exams for all riders and staff members coinciding with Monday's rest day.

Mitchelton-Scott said the team were notified of the four positive results for staff members from tests done on Sunday.

Kruijswijk was 11th overall, 1:24 behind race leader Joao Almeida of Portugal and 27 seconds behind double champion and fifth-placed Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.

"Within the team we take a lot of measures to avoid contamination", a statement from Kruijswijk read.

On the Tour de France, two positive tests in a team within one week would have triggered the ejection of the outfit from the race but no such rule was put in place for the Italian grand tour, which started in Sicily on October 3.

"The first part of the stage was fairly quiet, then a frenetic finish with many teams who wanted to race in the front", said Almeida.

"Tomorrow is a very undulating stage, there will be some attacks, but we will be prepared", said Almeida.

Italy, which hosted the rescheduled world championships last month, has seen a recent rise in coronavirus cases, with a post-lockdown record 5,456 people infected registered last Saturday.

"And I just feel fit, I can't believe I got it". He now has won stages in all three Grand Tours - the Giro (1), Tour de France (12) and Spanish Vuelta (4). "It is a pity that I have to leave the Giro this way".

Team Sunweb said Matthews is "currently asymptomatic, feels healthy and after receiving the results early this morning, he is now in quarantine". Four staff members but no riders tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 while on the French tour. "I won with my style, putting on a show!" said the Bora-Hansgrohe rider of a stage the 30-year-old had dominated.

On Tuesday, the peloton, down to 145 riders from the 176 who started the race in Sicily on October 3, headed out from Lanciano for the 177km run north along the Adriatic Sea coastline to Tortoreto Lido.

Danish Jakob Fuglsang was the day's biggest loser after a puncture 10km from the finish aw him lose over a minute on his rivals going into Wednesday's 11th stage over 182km from Porto Sant'Elpidio to Rimini.
