Ontario to hire 600 more contact tracers to help isolate coronavirus cases

Ontario to hire 600 more contact tracers to help isolate coronavirus cases”

Ontario reported another 721 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

He said the health unit was going to follow up with contacts that are deemed to be of particularly high-risk situations for transmission, such as outbreaks. "There is nowhere this virus can hide ― and that's critical to our efforts to contain the spread of this deadly threat and flatten the curve of the second wave".

Yaffe said the provincial health team will meet later this week to review data from all public health units in the province and determine whether changes to current restrictions are necessary.

However, with new research showing higher levels of COVID-19 in the Ottawa sewage system than last week, Yaffe said the nation's capital will likely see an increase in infections in the next two to four days.

Statistics showed 231 people were hospitalized, 64 were placed in ICU and another 35 people were on a ventilator.

These 600 new recruits and 600 personnel from Statistics Canada will bring the total number to almost 4,000.

Ontario has already ordered the closure of indoor fitness programs, like spin classes, in the COVID-19 hotspots of Toronto, Peel and Ottawa. Overall, 84 per cent of the new cases were in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area.

At the health unit's weekly media briefing on Tuesday, Gardner said Public Health Ontario is now providing a service and is doing about 20 per cent of the health unit's contacts.

"Case and contact management is a key component of Ontario's fall preparedness plan".

No new cases of COVID-19 were recorded Wednesday by Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health.

People unwilling to do so can still reach out to the health unit. More than four million Canadians have already downloaded the app to date and almost 1,000 COVID-19 positive Ontarians have sent anonymous alerts to their close contacts.

It's another sign Ontario isn't ready for the expected spread of COVID-19 this fall, said Green Leader Mike Schreiner.
