Singapore Airways' airplane restaurant fills up in minutes

Singapore Airways' airplane restaurant fills up in minutes”

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed that seatings for its upcoming "Restaurant A380" - a limited-time dining experience hosted inside its grounded Airbus A380 at the Singapore Changi Airport, and featuring dishes from the carrier's in-flight menu - have sold out within a half-hour of being made available to the public on Monday.

With flights largely grounded by the coronavirus pandemic, Singapore Airlines is trying novel ways to raise money, including using two of the superjumbos parked at Changi Airport as temporary eateries and offering guided tours of its training centre.

Customers who were unable to make a reservation after 12.30am were invited to join a wait list, which has since also been closed.

In order to abide by the required safe distancing measures, two SIA A380 Airbuses will be used for the dining experience, which will allow guests to use about half of the seats on both aircraft.

The report also shared that in each A380, Suites have six seats, Business class has 78 seats, Premium Economy has 44 seats, while Economy has 343 seats.

The airline has opened its waiting list for diners to indicate their interest. In normal flying service, the carrier's A380s can seat as many as 471 people, according to its website.

When asked if it plans to extend the onboard dining experience due to the keen interest from the public, it said: "We are now looking into accommodating all who have made reservations, as well as potentially some of those on the waitlist, for this unique dining experience".

"These experiences offer something for everyone - from frequent flyers who miss our world-class in-cabin products and service, to couples and families who want an exclusive dining experience, and parents who are after an enjoyable activity-filled day with their children during the school holidays", Singapore Airlines wrote in a press release issued on September 29.

"With Covid-19 drastically reducing the number of flights operated by the SIA Group, we have created unique activities that would allow us to engage with our fans and customers during this time".

SIA also shared that it is very grateful for the "extremely strong support" it has received from its customers.

Entitled Discover Your Singapore Airlines, there are three initiatives in the offering. For those wishing to "travel" without leaving home, Singapore Airlines also offers a meal delivery service.
