COVID-19: Government will give 'detailed consideration' to recommended Level 5 restrictions”

Prof. Gerry Killeen, AXA Research Chair in Applied Pathogen Ecology at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork said that a move to Level 5 would be the "right thing to do".

"The higher the community transmission the more hard it is to protect medically vulnerably people in all heathcare settings".

"We have measures in place in Ireland that many European countries, even though they jave higher figures than Ireland, don't have in place".

Four deaths were also reported up north within this period.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn noted that they were seeing concerning reports of people going in to work despite experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.

The recommendation comes less than two weeks after Nphet controversially recommended the level five restrictions.

After Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan were moved to Level 4 restrictions and household visits were prohibited island-wide on October 15th, NPHET recommended the country move to Level 5 restrictions.

However the government opted to move all counties to level 3 instead. However, play areas and parks will remain open with protective measures in place.

All but essential retail outlets would be closed, and pubs, cafés, and restaurants would be allowed to offer takeaway services only.

As of 2pm today 246 Covid-19 patients were in hospital, of which 30 are in ICU.

NPHET's daily statement says that the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HSPC) has today been notified of three additional deaths related to COVID-19.

This morning the HSE's chief clinical officer and NPHET member Dr Colm Henry warned that the widespread uncontrolled community transmission of Covid-19 represented "the greatest threat to our healthcare services".

Over the last 28 weeks in total, 1,305 "excess deaths" (deaths above the average for the corresponding period in previous years) have been registered in Northern Ireland, with the number of "excess deaths" in the year to date to 9th October totalling 1,046.

"Every time you physically interact with another person, you are providing an opportunity for the virus to spread", he said.
