Google announce new Google Lens features for Search, Shopping and Education”

Can't remember the name of a song, but you can hum a few bars? On the shopping side, if you are browsing products online, Lens can find the exact or similar items and suggest ways to style it. Lens can now recognize 15 billion objects, according to Google (up from 1 billion two years ago).

The latest addition to Google Search for mobile can understand your humming, whistling and singing to identify songs. If you're looking for how a camera feature works and the result is deep inside a 4,000-word review, Google will be able to find these answers better. The feature is now in the testing phase in the United States, and the Mountain View-based search giant says it's already collaborating with Volvo and Porsche to bring it to users.

Others have speculated as to which songs the algorithm won't be able to identify, rapping tracks like Eminem's "Rap God" - known for its extremely fast-paced monotonous tempo and large amount of lyrics - into the platform. After you're done, Google will present you actual songs based on a percentage match score which it thinks comes closest to your performance.

"Our models are trained to identify songs based on a variety of sources, including humans singing, whistling or humming, as well as studio recordings", the company wrote in today's announcement. The algorithms additionally take away all the opposite particulars, like accompanying devices and the voice's timbre and tone. "What we're left with is the song's number-based sequence, or the fingerprint".

The feature is now available in English on iOS, and in more than 20 languages on Android.

Google isn't alone in providing online song searching via humming. But the company's feature works pretty fast, and is conveniently bundled with the Google Assistant, making it easy to access. It's also adding details about the health and safety precautions that businesses are taking during the pandemic, as well as an upcoming ability to see more information about a business within the Live View AR environment.

"On Google Assistant, it's just as simple". Say "Hey Google, what's this song?" and then hum the tune.
