Hamilton: Ex-F1 stars have "bee in their bonnet" over success

Hamilton: Ex-F1 stars have

Sebastian Vettel believes Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher was better than Lewis Hamilton despite the British star's record number of race wins.

"Nevertheless, I have to say that Michael will always be my hero. It's just a shame that I don't think Michael noticed much of it", he told Sport1.

"And both the karting experience and the Race of Champions experience, I think [showed] he had a natural ability that, as I said, I haven't seen with anyone else so far".

Meanwhile, Hamilton hit out at critics like Sir Jackie Stewart who consistently question where the Mercedes driver fits in among the true F1 greats.

"He had something that I have not seen in other drivers".

Stewart said comparing Hamilton to drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark was hard due to the longer calendar and tendency for teams to be more dominant in the modern era.

Asked what the signal and the record meant to him, Hamilton answered: "I don't have a clue what to state".

"In 20 years' time, whenever it is, when I'm looking back, I can promise you this - I will not be talking down any young driver that is coming through and succeeding", Hamilton added. "They don't know you personally and how you are actually, no one knows what goes on inside people's heads and that's why it's a bit silly to judge people based on what they see from outside".

Schumacher suffered a bad skiing accident in 2013 and was brought into a medically induced coma.

Recent reports have claimed he has been moved to a £27million mansion in Majorca. But as I said you can not cherish him enough for what he has achieved'.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was heard asking for the safety auto to come in to prevent the tyre temperatures dropping any further, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen making a similar request.

Schumacher was not on Sir Jackie's list of the great when he named Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna.

But Mercedes team principal Wolff said DAS had not been a game-changer in ensuring Hamilton did not suffer from as severe tyre warming issues at the front of the field. This sparked a backlash from Hamilton, who said "older drivers" have a "bee in the hood".

"I don't think you should knock anyone out for the way they work", Hamilton said after Sunday's race after introducing his son Mick with Schumacher's race helmets. I don't know why but maybe one day they'll get over it. I have so much respect for past legends even though they continue to speak negatively about me.
