IKEA to launch groundbreaking campaign this Black Friday to 'buy-back' its old furniture from customers

Ikea will buy back unwanted furniture for up to half of its original price as part of a new sustainability initiative.

The traded-in items will then be available to buy second-hand in Ikea stores. It said the "Buy Back" initiative, launching on November 27, is part of the world's biggest furniture retailer's goal of becoming "a fully circular and climate positive business by 2030".

Products eligible for the buy back scheme include dressers, bookcases, chests of drawers and dining tables and desks.

Hege Chabjorson, Sustainability Manager for IKEA UK and Ireland, said "being round" was a good business opportunity and a responsibility, and that the climate crisis should make everyone seriously reconsider their consumption habits.

"We want to offer customers' sustainable solutions for their furniture they no longer need, even if it's served them well over the years", says Stefan Vanoverbeke from Ingka Group.

Prior to returning furniture, customers must fill out an online offer request. "It's this kind of approach and way of thinking that will help us achieve our goals of becoming a circular business and people and planet positive", IKEA stated. From there, they'll receive an automatically generated preliminary offer and be invited to bring the fully assembled product to the store.
