Kyrgyzstan President resigns in bid to avoid bloodshed”

"So, I have made a decision to resign", Jeenbekov said.

Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek is now under a state of emergency, but a few hundred Japarov supporters demonstrated in centre of the city, defying a ban on rallies, to demand that the president resign and parliament dissolve itself.

Zhaparov, a former lawmaker who was freed from jail by demonstrators protesting the October 4 parliamentary election results, has demanded Jeenbekov's resignation.

The Kyrgyz president has faced calls to step down from thousands of protesters who stormed government buildings a night after pro-government parties reportedly swept parliamentary seats in the October 4 vote.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the meeting took place, but protests demanding Jeenbekov's resignation continued Thursday morning.

In light of the accusations, Mr Jeenbekov refused to sign the decree confirming Mr Zhaparov's appointment and asked the parliament to hold another vote. "In this case blood will be spilled, it is inevitable".

As Eurasianet repored, anti-Jeenbekov crowds were planning to to march on the president's residence.

He says he doesn't want to be remembered as, quote, "a president who shed blood and shot at his own citizens".

Supporters of new prime minister Sadyr Japarov rejected the delay, and pressed him to resign immediately.

"No power is worth the integrity of our country and harmony in society". "All presidential powers have fully passed to me today", Japarov said. As news of Jeenbekov's resignation reached them, they started chanting "Parliament must go!" and "Isayev must go!". According to, Isayev avoided answering whether he would also resign. But if he goes, the prime minister is next in line to the acting presidency.

Japarov's supporters freed him from prison last week amid unrest after the parliamentary election which official results said was a landslide victory for allies of Jeenbekov. The opposition said the election was tainted by vote-buying and other irregularities.

The election of a new parliamentary speaker had appeared to bolster Jeenbekov's position. "It is clear that one of the obstacles toward democratic progress is the attempt by organized crime groups to exert influence over politics and elections", the statement said.

Though not directly named, presumably that is a reference to the Matraimovs and possibly Japarov, too.

In a strongly worded statement Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy lamented the efforts by organized crime groups to gain political control. "The ultimate goal must be to uphold the Kyrgyz Constitution and rule of law".

The current turmoil in Kyrgyzstan centers on domestic rivalries.

How Japarov, a man with little government experience and much of it more than a decade ago, before his life in exile and prison, will run a country in the middle of this mess is unclear. Over the next few days, two candidates emerged for the prime minister's job, 51-year-old Japarov and Tilek Toktogaziyev, a 29-year-old businessman from a liberal opposition party. Not counting acting prime ministers, Kyrgyzstan has had 22 prime ministers in 29 years of independence.
