Russian Federation registers second coronavirus vaccine, says third on the way

Russian Federation registers second coronavirus vaccine, says third on the way”

The latter was the first one registered in the world, and is called Sputnik V.

"Novosibirsk's Vektor [State Virology and Biotechnology Center] has registered the second Russian coronavirus vaccine today", Putin said via televised video conference. The vaccine is also completely safe, with the only side-effect being a mild pain at the site of injection, he claimed. Vektor plans to produce the first 60,000 doses of EpiVacCorona "in the nearest future", she added.

"The Vector centre is also initiating post-registration clinical trials in the various regions of Russian Federation that would include 40,000 volunteers", she was quoted as saying.

Golikova noted that the trials will include 150 volunteers aged above 60, suggesting that EpiVacCorona might be suitable for elderly people.

These vary in type and include DNA plasmid vaccines, inactivated virus vaccines, adenovirus-vectored vaccines, RNA vaccines, protein subunit vaccines and virus-like particle vaccines, they said.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which authorizes pharmaceuticals for distribution in the U.S. - asked vaccine developers last week to spend two months monitoring for serious side effects after the second dose is given to trial participants.

Also Read | Explained: When will we have a vaccine for Covid-19? The vaccine named EpiVacCorona comes after Russian Federation recently granted similar approval to its first COVID-19 vaccine named Sputnik V. Notably, Sputnik V is also the first vaccine candidate in the world to attain regulatory approval.

The third Russian vaccine, developed by the Chumakov Centre, is also based on a different principle than the previous two drugs. It will be using weakened or deactivated real sars-cov-2 viruses, which will not be able to give the recipients COVID-19, but will still form a lasting immunity from the coronavirus infection.

The trial was not created to assess efficacy of the vaccine, so it is not possible to say whether the antibody responses induced by the vaccine, called BBIBP-CorV, are sufficient to protect from SARS-CoV-2 infection, according to the researchers.
