"We have chose to put further restrictions on hospitality, but to offer significantly more financial help", said First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in her announcement yesterday (7th October).

Nicola Sturgeon announced the measures today, which will force pubs in the Greater Glasgow area, Lothian, Forth Valley, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, to shut for two weeks from Friday, although they will be able to serve alcohol as a takeaway.

In Scotland's central belt, all licenced bars and restaurants will be required to close indoors and outdoors from 6pm this evening.

"And the presence of alcohol can of course affect people's willingness to physically distance", she said.

She said that without an ability to sell any alcohol, most pubs that could open were unlikely to be viable.

Ms Sturgeon said: "We are not imposing mandatory travel restrictions at this stage, and specifically, we are not insisting that people cancel any half term breaks they have planned".

The First Minister also confirmed six further coronavirus deaths had been registered in the past 24 hours in Scotland among people who first tested positive in the previous 28 days, taking the total number of deaths to 2,544.

"Do you fear we might be going down a similar legal path now because there are a lot of people in the hospitality industry who say defining what is a cafe and what is a restaurant is very hard". "Any support to underwrite furlough will have to go far beyond the Job Support Scheme, which seems unlikely to be taken up by many hospitality businesses".

"The financial support on offer is of course welcome, but it does not go almost far enough".

There would also be a knockon effect on brewers, who had already seen around 50% of their on-trade business disappear this year, she added.

The moves are introduced after Scotland reported more than 1,000 new infections in one day.

The Scottish government on Wednesday banned pubs and restaurants from serving alcoholic beverages indoors as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"We have repeatedly asked for scientific data from the Scottish government to validate these escalating restrictions and yet we have been singled out, charged and found guilty without any supporting evidence".

Commenting on the measures, UKHospitality executive director for Scotland Willie Macleod said: "This is a total catastrophe".

Details of the package haven't been laid out yet, but we'll update this article when we know.
