Disney issues racism warning for several classic movies”

A series of classic animated Disney films have been given content advisory warnings to alert potentially sensitive viewers of any negative racial depictions or outdated ethnic stereotypes.

"This programme includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures".

"These stereotypes had been fallacious then and are fallacious now", reads an evidence on Disney's Stories Matter web site concerning the brand new advisory notices.

The warning says the content giant decided not to take down the work, but rather "acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together".

"Disney is dedicated to creating tales with inspirational and aspirational themes that replicate the wealthy variety of the human expertise across the globe".

"While these cartoons do not represent today's society, they are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed".

Disney has put warnings on some of its classic children's movies over racial stereotyping.

But the channel has now changed its warning on films including Peter Pan, The Jungle Book and Dumbo too after members of the public accused Disney of trying to "gloss over" the true impact of racism embedded in its films. In addition to this, the cat "sings in poorly accented English voiced by a white actor and plays the piano with chopsticks".

Disney+ has updated the content warning on some of its classic films.

An example of what the viewer sees before the film starts on Disney+.

In Dumbo, a group of crows who teach Dumbo to fly, are portrayed with exaggerated "Black" voices.

The advisory isn't new, according to Disney, but it's now been updated and strengthened for that film and others. This portrayal reinforces the "perpetual foreigner" stereotype, while the film also features lyrics that mock the Chinese language and culture such as "Shanghai, Hong Kong, Egg Foo Young".

The cringe-worthy Jim Crow scene in "Dumbo" is also addressed: "The crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations", Disney writes. Similar to the Native people in Peter Pan, pirates speak in an indecipherable language, creating "a singular and racist representation of Asian and Middle Eastern peoples".
