Fiat Chrysler avoids Canada strike with last-minute deal

Fiat Chrysler avoids Canada strike with last-minute deal”

The auto union said FCA will invest in the development of an advanced vehicle platform that will allow for the assembly of plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles, and that at least one new model will be available by 2025.

Unifor reached a new labor deal with Ford Motor Co. last month, which also secured a almost $1.5 billion investment in two plants and a commitment to build electric cars at a plant near Toronto. The Windsor plant, which accounts for 10 per cent of FCA's North American production, has already been shutdown for three weeks due to scheduled downtime.

If the FCA contract is ratified that would leave General Motors Co.as the last automaker with which Unifor has to reach a new agreement.

"It is, I will argue, probably about the best economic agreement we've put together in 20, 25 years", Dias said.

"The lion's share of (the investment) will be coming from Fiat Chrysler", Dias said.

Unifor, the Canadian union, said the tentative deal is a three-year agreement, which addresses demands it had on wages and health benefits.

Additionally, the headcount at Fiat Chrysler in Canada is expected to grow by almost 2,000 as a result of the new platform, with workers starting to come on board in 2023. Today, Dias said the new jobs added will include calling back 425 workers and adding more than 1,500 new jobs to the Windsor region.

"Those products will lead to the recall of over 100 members at the Etobicoke casting plant", said Dias.

A spokesperson for Industry Minister Navdeep Bains said in an emailed statement that they were "pleased to hear" that Unifor and FCA had reached a tentative deal, and that they are awaiting the results of the ratification vote.

Unifor went into this year's negotiations with concerns about restoring the third shift at Fiat Chrysler's Windsor and Brampton facilities.

Unifor says there will be a $50-million investment in the Brampton Assembly Plant to extend the life of the Chrysler 300 as well introduce multiple derivatives of the best-selling Dodge Charger and Challenger.

Unifor, Canada's biggest private-sector union, announced its tentative three-year agreement with Fiat Chrysler late Wednesday, just ahead of a midnight strike deadline.

Local 444 president Dave Cassidy says "it's a great deal" and he can't wait to bring it home to everybody on Sunday.

Up next, Unifor will begin negotiations with GM next week.
