Flu Clinic Canceled Due to Vaccine Shortage

Flu Clinic Canceled Due to Vaccine Shortage”

N.C. DHHS started tracking this year's flu season on September 27 with a weekly COVID-19 and flu surveillance report.

Flu shots are free for seniors, children from six months to five years old, Indigenous people, and people with chronic health conditions, and are available from pharmacists, primary care providers, and public health clinics. However, getting the vaccine provides benefits even if the flu bug bites you.

Fairfax County is also holding flu vaccine clinics for adults and children 6 months or older at the Herndon Reston District Health Office on October 24 and the Mount Vernon District Health Office on November 7. The vaccine works by triggering your body to produce protective antibodies that help prevent the flu.

In addition to the flu shot, health officials say stay home if you're sick, keep sick kids away from in-school instructional days, wash your hands often, frequently clean and sanitize surfaces around you, cover your cough with your elbow, use tissues and throw them away.

At the Civic Center on Thursday, the Chatham County Health Department will be having a drive-thru flu clinic for people to get their flu shot before the midst of flu season.

Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

The clinics were originally meant to exclusively serve people 50 and older, because older people tend to be more at risk for flu-related complications.

The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu and its complications. This year, however, it will be administered during the covid-19 pandemic, with the health authorities emphasising that the vaccine is especially important for those people who are in the most vulnerable population groups, as well as their contacts, to reduce the complications caused by both diseases and to avoid any overload in the health system. And the flu vaccine isn't ideal but studies show if the vaccinated get sick, they don't get as severely ill.

"If you have the flu shot and still get the flu, symptoms should be milder", said Dr. Dougherty.

The shot is available at a number of locations across the region, including doctor's offices.

DPH's surveillance for the 2020-21 flu season began September 27 and will continue through late May.

According to the CDC, it is possible to have COVID and the flu at the same time, and United Kingdom scientists found that having them together significantly increases the risk of death.
