SCOTUS allows Trump administration to end 2020 census count

SCOTUS allows Trump administration to end 2020 census count”

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Trump administration to shut down the 2020 US census count earlier than originally planned, after putting a lower court ruling on hold that said the population count should continue until the end of the month. Ending the count earlier than expected has increased concern about ensuring an accurate count in CT. In Arkansas, an operation to send people into hard-to-count neighborhoods was suspended two days before the count was ending.

After the Supreme Court's decision, the Census Bureau said field operations would end on Thursday.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Trump administration to shut down the 2020 US Census count earlier than originally planned after putting a lower court ruling on hold that said the population count should continue until the end of the month.

The Trump administration said it changed the time line in order to meet a 31 December deadline set by statute for delivering census results to the president.

Without the data from the federal government, though, the secretary of the commonwealth pointed out his office can not track where exactly in certain communities to promote Census-taking efforts.

By sticking to the December 31 deadline, the Trump administration would end up controlling the numbers used for apportionment, no matter who wins next month's presidential election.

However, as noted by Ninth Circuit dissenting Judge Patrick Bumatay - with whom the justices agreed - the constitutional mandate for administration of the census does not mention "accuracy" in the count.

Boyce, who co-chaired the Complete Count Committee here in Central Ohio, says that the sudden loss of two weeks hurt their effort to complete the constitutionally-mandated headcount of every person living in the country.

The census is critical to how voting districts are determined.

Tens of thousands of temporary census takers had been hired by the U.S. Census Bureau to knock on the doors of homes whose residents hadn't filled out their census forms.

Census Bureau announces end to population...

An appellate court panel upheld Koh's order allowing the census to continue through October but struck down the part that suspended the December 31 deadline for turning in apportionment numbers. "This representation is contrary to the government's repeated assertions to the courts below that it could not meet the statutory deadline under any circumstances".

So, the city is moving up one of its events aimed at getting people to complete their forms.

The stakes are high to get the most complete and accurate Census count possible. The proposal to extend the apportionment deadline passed the Democratic-controlled House, but the Republican-controlled Senate didn't take up the request. Due to COVID, however, that deadline was extended - to August, then extended again to the end of October. The Justice Department had told the court that "there is virtually no prospect that the [U.S. Census] Bureau will be able to comply with the statutory deadline", unless they were allowed to end the count.

Montanans who have not yet done so should respond to the 2020 Census now at MY2020CENSUS.GOV or by calling 1-844-330-2020.

The Census Bureau says it has counted 99.9% of households nationwide, though some regions of the country such as parts of MS and hurricane-battered Louisiana fall well below that.

An estimated 10.5 million households have self-responded to the Census, with around 2.4 million of those being in the hardest-to-count areas.

"That said, the Supreme Court's order will result in irreversible damage to the 2020 Census", Clarke said.
