Trudeau calls China's Hong Kong diplomacy 'coercive'

Trudeau calls China's Hong Kong diplomacy 'coercive'”

This week he labelled the Chinese arrest of the two Canadians as "hostage diplomacy". this comes as Canada's ambassador the the U.N., Bob Rae, also delivered a stern rebuke to Chinese claims of Canadian "bullying" over the Menq Wanzhou affair.

Cong Peiwu said if Canada cares about 300,000 Canadian citizens in Hong Kong - and Canadian companies doing business there - it should support efforts to fight what he called fight violent crime.

Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Canada Cong Peiwu participates in a roundtable interview with journalists at the Embassy of China in Ottawa on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019.

China on Friday justified a warning by its envoy to the Canadian government to not to grant asylum to Hong Kong residents fleeing overseas, saying that the ambassador was stating Beijing's just position.

Many Hong Kong activists are said to have fled overseas to avoid the Chinese imposition of its new wide ranging "security" law in the former British colony that criminalises any form of dissent with harsh penalties up to life in prison. Cong said they are still undergoing a legal process in China, but he did not provide further details.

When asked by reporters if that latter comment was a threat, Cong replied: "That's your interpretation".

"We will remain absolutely committed to working with our allies to ensure that China's approach of coercive diplomacy, its arbitrary detention of two Canadian citizens, alongside other citizens of other countries around the world, is not viewed as a successful tactic by them", Trudeau said earlier this week as the two countries marked 50 years of relations at one of the lowest times in bilateral relations.

Ties plummeted following Canada's arrest of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei and daughter of its founder. "They are purely about internal affairs of China, which brooks no interference from the outside", he added.

She is now fighting her extradition to the United States, where she faces fraud charges, in court.

The tension between the two was ignited by the 2018 detention in Vancouver of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a US extradition request, and subsequent arrest and imprisonment of two Canadians in China on alleged espionage charges. Shortly after Meng's arrest, Beijing detained two Canadians on national security charges and halted imports of canola seed.

"The Hong Kong issue and the Xinjiang-related issue are not about the issue of human rights". "Whether it's talking about the situation faced by the Uighurs, whether it's talking about the very concerning situation in Hong Kong, whether it's calling out China for its coercive diplomacy".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government will not stop standing up for human rights in China.
