Trump administration denies California relief for 6 fires”

The federal government has denied California's request for a disaster declaration for wildfires that have burned swathes of land across the USA state since early September.

California officialssaid earlier that the Trump administration had rejected California's application for disaster relief funds, which aimed at bolstering state's emergency response to wildfires across the state and support impacted residents in six counties in the state, including Fresno, Los Angeles, Madera, Mendocino, San Bernardino, San Diego and Siskiyou counties.

"The state plans to appeal the decision and believes we have a strong case that California's request meets the federal requirements for approval", Ferguson said in an email to The Associated Press on Friday.

The dispute surfaced as a representative of one fire-stricken area warned that time was running out to clean up debris before rain and snow arrived, bringing the threat of mudslides and toxins being washed into a river watershed.

It was unclear why the Trump administration denied California's request.

"The true cost won't be known for months or years afterward", he said.

The biggest is the August Complex fire, which began Aug. 16 and as of October 15 had burned just over 1 million acres through seven Northern California counties and was 77% contained.

The administration urged California to improve the management of its forests, while Newsom blamed climate change for wildfires.

Republican state Assemblyman Jim Patterson of Fresno said before the reversal that he had consulted with area congressional offices.

"That's not up to me to take care of the national forest".

A spokesman for California's Office of Emergency Services told Fox News that it "appears the federal government has reversed course". This year's budget included $85.6 million in new, ongoing dollars to fund permanent firefighting positions, and continues the funding for CAL FIRE to procure innovative technology that allows us to model fire behavior.

Numerous studies have linked bigger wildfires in America to climate change from the burning of coal, oil and gas.

To date, the total number of fatalities statewide is 31 and more than 9,200 structures have been destroyed.

After repeatedly downplaying the catastrophic wildfires that have ravaged California in recent months and falsely attributing the blazes to poor "forest management", the Trump administration this week denied Gov. Gavin Newsom's request for federal disaster assistance needed to recover from the destruction the fires inflicted across the state.

All electricity was expected to be restored by late Friday after the second round of hot, dry gusts this week moved through the region and raised the risk of fires, PG&E said.

The utility better targeted outages this time after it was criticized in 2019 for cutting power to about 800,000 customers and leaving about 2 million people in the dark for days. To date, those fires have burned more than 650,000 acres.

"It means if a new fire breaks out, that that fire is going to be able to burn very rapidly". The Zogg fire was extinguished on Tuesday, while the Glass fire is 97% contained.
