United Kingdom must prepare for ‘no deal’ Brexit, says PM Boris Johnson”

"The EU have effectively ended them, and only if the EU fundamentally changes its position will it be worth talking".

However, UK negotiator David Frost spoke to Barnier to underline there was "no basis for negotiations in London as of Monday" in light of Johnson's declaration, a spokesman at 10 Downing Street said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that European Union negotiators will visit London next week to continue talks on the post-Brexit phase, despite Britain's threat to abandon the negotiations.

"They (the EU) are not willing unless there's some fundamental change of approach to offer this country the same terms as (the free trade agreement with) Canada", he added.

On Thursday the European Council - the leaders of the 27 EU member states - told the United Kingdom it was not ready to moderate its demands for the United Kingdom to stick to regulations banning state aid to industries and for continued fishing rights in British waters in return for tariff-free trade with the bloc.

Likewise, having been rumbled in their ploy to bind Britain to other single market rules via Northern Ireland, EU leaders resent the enshrinement in law of Tory contingency plans to prevent it.

Simon Coveney said he believed an agreement would be made, despite the two sides being "miles apart" on fisheries.

In a harsh rebuke of the European Union, he added: "And given that they have refused to negotiate seriously for much of the last few months, and given that this summit appears explicitly to rule out a Canada-style deal, I have concluded that we should get ready for January 1 with arrangements that are more like Australia's based on simple principles of global free trade".

Only then might we see an extensive programme of state aid, public ownership, economic planning and the devolution to Scotland and Wales of the substantial powers at last repatriated from Brussels.

"I have concluded that we should get ready for January 1 with arrangements that are more like Australia's based on simple principles of global free trade", Johnson said. "But for whatever reason it is clear from the summit that after 45 years of membership they are not willing - unless there is some fundamental change of approach - to offer this country the same terms as Canada", he said.

Both sides have been calling on each other to compromise on key issues, including fishing and limits on government subsidies to businesses.

If no deal is reached, trade rules will revert to the bare bones of World Trade Organization regulations.

Mrs von der Leyen said they were continuing to work on a deal but the "conditions must be right" if there was to be an agreement. "There's a deal to be done, but there needs to be flexibility on both sides, energy and goodwill and political will on both sides".

Britain will leave the Brexit transition period on 1 January 2021.

"We are ready for a deal, but not at any price", France's President Emmanuel Macron said, insisting that that Britain needed a deal more than the EU.

Some EU figures fear Boris Johnson still doesn't know if he actually wants a deal and is trying to buy time while be grapples with the Covid crisis.

Chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier said late Thursday that his team would be London-bound for more talks next week and planned to host negotiations in Brussels the week after that.

"Any tariffs or any delays at the border will make it harder for goods to flow freely, whether those are foods or medicines", she said.

"If there is no deal, European fishermen will have no access to British waters whatsoever".
