Andrey Rublev wins St. Petersburg Open for 4th title of season

Andrey Rublev wins St. Petersburg Open for 4th title of season”

World No. 10 Andrey Rublev held off a spirited challenge from Denis Shapovalov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to get within one win of his fourth ATP title of the year at the 500-level event in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Rublev didn't face a single break point.

Zverev will also be top seed for next week's Cologne Championships tournament where he is joined in the draw by French Open semi-finalist Diego Schwartzman and Auger-Aliassime who will be fifth seed. Coric saved three breaks, each with an excellent serve, but on the fourth, he made a double fault.

"The match was unreal", Rublev told ATPTour.com. "The level was high from both sides". Both of us deserved to win.

However, in the second set, the situation changed completely.

"I think Andrey is one of the best players on the planet right now", Shapovalov said.

Rublev gains 120 FedEx ATP Rankings points for reaching his fourth final of 2020 (3-0).

With just two places left in the eight-man field for the London season finale, Rublev is 249 points ahead of Diego Schwartzman, who now occupies the final qualification position. Shapovalov has a 2-1 edge on Rublev in the lifetime series.

Rublev in the semifinal match of the tournament in St. Petersburg defeated the Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Rublev is attempting to capture his second ATP Tour trophy in Russian Federation and his fourth crown this year. For the 22-year-old, it will be the eighth final in his career, and he has won five titles so far. Only Novak Djokovic, who owns a 37-2 record in 2020, is ahead of Rublev in this category. However, last year, Russian Danil Medvedev was more successful. The Croatian rallied to beat 2015 champion Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 56 minutes.

Coric's appearance in Sunday's final will be his seventh final match on the ATP Tour.

Shapovalov played with consistent depth and aggression to gain the only break of the first set at 3-3.

The Russian fired another forehand victor in game five for a 3-2 lead and created a break chance in the next one with a return victor. His sixth ace closed out the 39-minute set, 6-3, and it was on to the decider.

'In that game [at 1-2], he was 40/0 up and he went to take a risk, said Rublev. When he gave me this opportunity, I used it. A game later, Shapovalov closed out the 44-minute set, 6-4, with a service victor.
